The purpose of this course is to prepare students, at an advanced-level of English, for the types of activities and discussions they will encounter in an English-language university course as many of those courses will require them to be able to participate actively. Students will not “study” English conversation, but rather use English as a foreign language to participate in a variety of discussion activities that are common in academia.
In this course, you will focus on advanced grammatical topics and editing/proofreading skills that will help you write English successfully for an academic audience. Over the course of the session, you will read authentic texts, analyze their grammatical structures, write compositions and develop your critical eye by proofreading and editing your own and other students’ writing. Reading, writing and editing tasks are integrated in this course. Instructors must cover the assigned units and choose writing tasks either from the book or from elsewhere that give students practice with the target grammatical structures and concepts. In addition, instructors will choose which writing and editing exercises to do in class or assign as homework.
In this course, you will focus on learning new reading skills and reviewing previous reading skills to help you further develop your vocabulary, reading fluency, and reading skills. Over the course session, you will use authentic academic text to develop your critical thinking, vocabulary, and reading skills. There is an integration of intensive and extensive reading models.
In this course, you will focus on academic writing skills that will improve your ability to write an essay at a university level. Over the course of the session, you will further develop your ability to write and logically organize an essay as well as learn how to respond to academic articles using the essay format. You will also further develop your summarizing and research skills. Finally, you will further develop your academic research methods and expected to use proper citations in your writing.
